What is Ketoconazole?

Five facts you should know about one of the key ingredients in dandruff-fighting shampoos.

what is ketoconazole

People who suffer from itchy, flakey scalps have many options in the haircare aisle. NIZORAL® is the only over the counter anti-dandruff shampoo that has ketoconazole as the active ingredient, and here’s what you should know about it:

  • It’s an antifungal: Ketaconazole is part of a class of broad spectrum antifungals called imidazoles. These potent ingredients are considered broad spectrum because they can treat different types of fungi and, in some cases, bacteria.

  • It limits fungal growth: Ketaconazole’s primary mechanism in battling fungus is limiting its growth. One study showed that compared to other commonly used popular antifungal agents, ketoconazole was up to 5,000 percent more effective in limiting fungal growth than other common ingredients such as octopirox ketoconazole.

  • It can fight a variety of ailments, not just dandruff: Ketaconazole is extremely efficient against seborrheic dermatitis, of which dandruff is a much milder version. It has also been used for ringworm and jock itch. Tinea versicolor, a rash that is characterized by discolored patches of skin, has also been successfully treated with ketoconazole.

  • It stays on the skin for up to seven days: The length of time this antifungal ingredient stays active on the skin is one of the main reasons it is so effective against stubborn dandruff.
